BP Myth Busters: The Only Thing to do in Hilton Head is go to the beach…?

Hmm… as great as the beaches are, we beg to differ that they are the ONLY activity to enjoy here– there’s tons to do on Hilton Head Island! We’re busting this myth with 5 examples of other great activities on the island– other than the sand and sun!

  1. Sea Pines Forest PreserveImage result for forest preserve hhi
The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is one of Hilton Head’s greatest treasures. From a myriad of wildlife, beautiful serene paths and bridges, and Spanish moss hanging all around, this is an oasis away from the beach, with hours of exploring for you to do. From the swamps, to the lakes, to the tree covered walkways, you truly feel as though you are in a different and very special untouched world. Another great piece to the forest preserve is the picnic benches overlooking the lake, for a picnic after a little exploring. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is an absolute must on Hilton Head, and is so easily accessible from all of our properties— especially those that are in Sea Pines Plantation.
  2. Coastal Discovery Museum
Image result for coastal discovery museum
Whether you’re into snakes, butterflies, turtles, or shells, the Coastal Discovery Museum in Honey Horn Plantation is the place for you. Between their educational tours and classes that run every day, to their fun interactive museum, there’s tons to do here. There is a butterfly enclosure, live snakes, a beautiful gazebo and dock that walk out over the marshes for a beautiful view, and amazing employees who are more than willing to give you some information about whatever you’d like! This is a great spot for adults and children alike, and a wonderful place to get out of the sun for a couple of hours.
  3. Old Town Bluffton
Image result for old town bluffton
From Old Town charm, amazing restaurants, a bustling farmer’s market, and tons of shops and history, this is a great place to spend an afternoon strolling the oak draped streets in Bluffton. There has been a recent boom of business in Old Town Bluffton that has made it a great new hub for tourism just minutes off of Hilton Head Island. From cute boutique stores, an amazing and expansive farmer’s market on Thursday’s, and wonderful restaurants just oozing with southern charm, this is not a place to miss!

With a myriad of shops, restaurants, entertainment, and much more, Shelter Cove has always been a famous Hilton Head Island stop. Recently, the Shelter Cove Towne Center opened up across 278 featuring even more shops, a great park, a wonderful view of the marsh and ocean, and restaurants, activities, etc. Both of these are great places to spend some time with your family, get out of the sun, and maybe even have a little shopping spree!
  5. Pinckney Island

Maybe on your drive to or from Old Town Bluffton, you can make a stop at the Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge, nested right in between the two bridges that take you off of Hilton Head Island. This is nature at it’s finest, and more pure. From bird watching to just sitting down and taking in the sounds of nature uninterrupted, we recommend this spot for anyone just needing a little quiet getaway.

The Main Course: Heart Shaped DIY Pizza-

pizzavday

There’s nothing quite as fun or romantic as doing a little design your own pizza! This is a pretty simple “recipe”. We suggest heading over to the grocery store to pick up some pizza dough, then grabbing whatever toppings you like from pepperoni to bell peppers– you name it. A necessity is cutting the pepperonis to look like little hearts, and shaping the dough as a heart as well to be festive! This one is all up to you for creativity… Once you have rolled out your dough and added your toppings, pop the pizza (or pizzas) into the oven at 450 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until you see the crust is browning! Enjoy!

Keeping with the red and green color scheme, we have a delicious appetizer or side that would make even someone who doesn’t like asparagus reach for seconds! The savory, salty prosciutto pairs perfectly with the asparagus, plus wrapping the prosciutto around the asparagus would be a great job to give the kids for a fun and safe way to help out!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 ounces sliced prosciutto, halved horizontally
  • 1 pound asparagus, trimmed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Working one at a time, wrap halved prosciutto slice on each asparagus spear at an angle, covering the entire length of the spear. Repeat with remaining prosciutto and asparagus.

White Chocolate Peppermint Oreo Bark:

What’s the holidays without sweet treats?! Peppermint bark is always a crowd favorite, and we love the cookies and cream addition to this recipe with Oreos incorporated! This is another simple recipe that has tons of potential for little helpers to feel like they have a big role in the creation of this dessert!

INGREDIENTS:
  • 20 ounces white chocolate morsels
  • 16 Oreos, roughly chopped
  • ⅓ cup crushed peppermint candy canes
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Line a 13 x 9 baking tray with parchment paper, making sure that extra paper hangs over the sides for easy lifting once chocolate is hardened. Set aside.
  2. Assemble Oreo cookies and crushed candy canes so that toppings are ready to use.
  3. In a medium bowl, break 8 ounces of white chocolate into pieces and microwave until fully melted and smooth. Be sure to stop and stir every 30 seconds so that chocolate doesn’t burn.
  4. Once chocolate in melted, spread onto prepared tray using a spatula or knife. White chocolate should cover entire pan in a thin layer.
  5. Top white chocolate with crushed Oreo cookies.
  6. Place pan in refrigerator for 10 minutes to harden.
  7. As chocolate mixture is hardening, melt remaining 12 ounces of white chocolate in the microwave until smooth.
  8. Remove pan from refrigerator and spread remaining white chocolate over the top in an even layer, coating the entire pan.
  9. Sprinkle crushed candy canes over top of chocolate.
  10. Place into the refrigerator for 15 minutes to harden completely.
  11. Once ready, lift parchment paper by overhang and set on counter. Chocolate will lift right out of paper.

Unleash Your Pup on Hilton Head During the Fall and Winter Seasons!

golden14

In the height of summer on the island, you likely won’t see any dogs on the beach… why is that? Because they are actually not allowed on the beach during the Summer from 10am-5pm due to high crowds and even higher heat!

The great news, however, is that your pup can roam free in the sand and water from October 1- February 28 whenever they please! Bring a tennis ball and let your dog swim to retrieve it, or laze the day away with your best friend by your side. The weather is so much more forgiving during the time of the year anyways, so your pup will surely thank you!
