When you are on Hilton Head Island this summer, you might be surprised to find that you are not given a straw with your beverage. No, it is not because they forgot to, it is because many local dining establishments are participating in the Palmetto Ocean Conservancy’s Strawless Summer Campaign. (#StrawlessSummer) From July through September, restaurants and eateries have been asked to not automatically hand out a straw with each drink.  Guests can request a straw, but the hope is that many patrons will drink without!

This campaign is part of a movement across the nation to reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our oceans.  By 2050 oceans are expected to contain more plastics than fish, and plastics currently account for 90% of the pollution in the ocean.  It is important that we all do our part in making sure that this trend be reversed.

You will be able to see if the restaurant you are dining at is a participating location as the Palmetto Ocean Conservancy has handed out stickers which are often placed on the front door. Or you can see a list of the participating restaurants and bars on the Conservancy’s Instagram account that you can follow here
