One Drove Under The Osprey’s Nest

Hilton Head Island has a fantastic array of wildlife, and visitors are always charmed and amazed at the everyday, commonplace sightings of them… The alligator sunning itself on the lawn, the deer nibbling grass in the yard, the white heron in the parking lot at Wal-Mart.

Yes, the mix of ecology and commerce that is so unique to Hilton Head keeps things interesting!

One of the most unique and eye-catching examples of this delightful co-existence of folks & fauna is right above the Island’s only highway.  The Cross Island Parkway is not generally thought of as a Wildlife Hotspot, but it does have a couple of famous inhabitants… A family of Ospreys have built a very successful nest up in the metal pipework of the Gumtree Rd exit sign.  You can’t miss it, since it’s almost as big as a one of the Smart Cars that pass underneath!

It’s hard to catch them at home, but when you do, it is a rewarding sight:

DSCF2120Ospreys are large fish-eating birds-of-prey, and tolerate a wide variety of habitats, so their nests can be found in all kinds of locations around the Island:

These huge nests are renovated and reused year after year, sometimes for decades.

In the spirit of wildlife preservation that exists here on Hilton Head, the Palmetto Electric Company has adopted a “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” attitude and has a webcam, er, “Osprey-cam” on one of their towers:
