Marsh Tacky Horse Exhibition

Daufuskie Rose a Marsh Tacky at Coastal Discovery Museum

Get up and close with an Island Marsh Tacky!  This Sunday the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration will present the Marsh Tacky Horse Exhibition at 231 Beach City Rd. from noon -3pm.  This hands on experience will showcase the horse that played an integral part in the survival of the Gullah people on Hilton Head Island and was thought to have died out long ago.  Rediscovery and recovery of the breed began in 2005 when the American Livestock Conservancy traveled to the lowcountry to determine whether the breed still existed.  More than 100 Tackies were found and their heritage confirmed through DNA samples.  The Marsh Tackys were said to have been ridden by Francis Marion, “The Swamp Fox” during the Revolutionary War.  Look for the upcoming Marsh Tacky Races to be held on Daufuskie Island this year!
