A Frequently Asked Question About Hilton Head

Perhaps one of the most common questions we get asked is:

“What is there to do on Hilton Head – besides golf and tennis?”

Our response?

“Oh boy.. do you have a few minutes?”

Hilton Head Island has so much to offer for a variety of interests, tastes, and activity levels that it would be near impossible to list everything there is to do, so we wanted to give you an overview of some of our favorites!

There are great festivals year-round on Hilton Head and the fall season brings some that have been drawing both locals and visitors for years:

In September you have the Italian Heritage Festival, the Salty Dog Cafe’s Annual Fall Festival and Lowcountry Boil, and the Harbour Town Fall Fest.

While October gets really rockin’ with the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d’Elegance.  This mega-event is rivaled only by the Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival.  The Salty Dog Cafe has got their Annual Oyster Roast, Lobster Fest, and Shrimp Festival, so they pretty much have all the shellfish covered!

By the way, children’s activities are plentiful here:  Besides the natural draw of the beach and all that has to offer for children of all ages, one of our favorite places is the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn.  With its trails, gardens, butterfly enclosure, and interactive experiences like “Lowcountry Critters” kids will be both entertained and enriched.

In Sea Pines, you will find a petting zoo at the Lawton Stables, as well as pony rides and trail rides on horses.

Also in Sea Pines there is the Forest Preserve, a 606-acre nature preserve where you can fish, visit historical sites, or just hike through the amazing natural landscapes of Hilton Head. You can go on a hayride through the Preserve each Thursday, or take an alligator & wildlife boat tour.

Kayaking is a favorite activity in Palmetto Dunes which has an 11 mile lagoon system where you will be able to view golf courses, nature, and beautiful homes from the water.

For adults, the Tiki Hut Bar has beachside bar service and great live music! Add these to the numerous restaurants and shopping establishments all within walking distance, and Forest Beach is a happening place!

Rainy days are chock full of activities too. Kids can visit The Sandbox, an interactive children’s museum located on Pope Ave, or they can burn their energy at the Island Playground located just off the Island. Adults can get their shop on at one of the two fabulous Tanger Outlet Malls, also located just off Island, or some of the nifty, unique shops and galleries around the Island.

Hilton Head has 3 movie theaters, 2 of which are small, independent houses that venture into foreign and offbeat fare, and then there’s The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina which has plays, musicals, and special performance events.

And hey!  Did we mention miniature golf?

Bottom line?  Wherever you decide to stay on Hilton Head Island, whether it is a home or villa, there is always something to do — and oh yeah, you can play golf or tennis too!!
