As you explore Hilton Head Island, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for new signs identifying Hilton Head Island’s historic Gullah neighborhoods: Stoney, Squire Pope, Chaplin, Jarvis-Jonesville, Mitchelville, Spanish Wells and more!


Gullah is the West African based culture that has survived centuries of slavery and more than a century of free lifestyle. It is unique to the Sea Islands of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. As a whole, this area is known as the Gullah Geechee Corridor, shown below, and it includes Hilton Head Island.
