Well…it is that time of the year again…Back to School! As a parent, I celebrate this day each year with such enthusiasm. It is going to be the day I can finally have some me time…even if it is just 30 minutes in the morning before I head off to work.
It is also this time of the year that I get the “bug” to go back to school. I’ll admit it…I love to learn! I know that probably makes me a nerd, but there is something about a fresh set of pencils and a new spiral notebook that makes me happy.
Learning has always been a component of family time throughout my life. Even as a child, my parents would take my brothers and I to Civil War battlefields & museums, and as we traveled along the road we would often stop when we saw an historical marker. My brothers and I know so many obscure facts that we really need to go on Jeopardy!!
With my own son, learning is still a huge part of our travel plans. We have found that learning experiences are often the least expensive activity on our trips and have always been the one that he remembers the most. Especially when you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in tasks and activities as our ancestors did. Spending one month or longer on Hilton Head, as many of our Fall guests do, leaves lot of time to get to know the Island better. You might even find, as many of us have, that it is a great place to live all year long!
Hilton Head Island is a great place to incorporate learning into your vacation. The opportunities for both children and adults are endless. Often just a bike ride around the Island will include several historical facts, ways of living and beautiful scenes that you can take with you.
If you want a more organized approach, we recommend you take a look at the activities and classes offered by one of the organizations listed below. These are all locally owned Hilton Head Island based companies that can share the vast history and unique experiences our Island has to offer.
Classes for children of all ages are available at the Coastal Discovery Museum. Get up close and personal with critters common here in the LowCountry, talk a walk along the beach and learn about the sea turtles, and take a class on crabbing. These are plenty other learning experiences are available to you!
Offers a wide variety of classes and activities aimed at adults whole have an interest in a specific topic or point of history. Their curriculum changes each year, so take a look at their website for the current/future offerings.
