It is not mermaids singing, it the sand on our beaches!
Next time you are on vacation here on Hilton Head Island, listen carefully because you might hear our sand singing. It may be not actual words but our sand produces sound vibrations that can be compared to the sound of violins. In fact, Charles Darwin was the first scientist to discuss this phenomenon happening.
In his book “A Naturalists Voyage around the World” he wrote: “Leaving Socego, we retraced our steps. Each time the horse put its foot in the sand, a chirping noise resulted”. The singing may be from billions of crystals rolled against each other by the wind. Another reason may be that after sundown, it could be from the sand cooling. Whatever may be the cause, next time you take a walk on our beach listen closely.
