Day Trips – Beaufort, South Carolina

Looking for something new to do when visiting Hilton Head Island?  How about a day trip to one of the amazing towns that are close by to our tropical paradise?  Take a day to explore the area around the Island, and you will discover a world of rich history, tempting treats, and unique and exquisite shopping!

The City of Beaufort is a short venture from Hilton Head Island and would only take about Beaufort SC Historic25 minutes by boat but takes an hour by car to reach the heart of the City.Park along the tree-lined streets and walk around the wide variety of gift shops, art galleries, and restaurants.  Enjoy a meal while looking out over the water, or stroll through Waterfront Park.  You can even take a horse and carriage ride, or learn about the early settlement known as Santa Elena.  Whatever you area of interest, Beaufort has something for you.

Here are some of our favorite activities when visiting Beaufort, South Carolina:

  1. Go strawberry picking.  If you are visiting in April or May, you can pick your own strawberries at the Dempsey Farm on St. Helena Island…just 15 minutes outside of Beaufort proper, and on the way to Hunting Island State park.  During the summer months , the farm offers pick your own tomatoes along with a wide assortment of vegetables grown locally.
  1. Check out Hunting Island State Park.   This natural treasure has a number of hiking trails through saltwater marshes, a large fishing pier and a natural beach where you can pose for photos on the driftwood that has washed ashore.
  1. Take the kids to Waterfront Park.  Stroll along the walkway and look for dolphins in the water.  Kids of all ages will enjoy the large playground.
  1. Visit the Santa Elena History Center.  Learn more about this new discovery that could change America’s history.  This 450-year-old settlement is said to be the first in North America.
