“Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!'” – Robin Williams
For every town and village there is a rite of passage which marks the beginning of Spring. For us here on Hilton Head Island, there is one event and only one event that can be said to mark the beginning of Spring. That event is the Annual Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day parade.
2016 marks the 33rd year the St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been held on Hilton Head Island. Started in 1983 by a small group of business owners and their families and friends, the event has grown to be one of the most popular events around. It even earned an award in 2002 as one of the Top 20 Tourism Events in the Southeast.
The parade is currently held at 3 pm the Sunday prior to St. Patrick’s Day, or on St. Patrick’s Day if it falls on a Sunday… which means this year the event will take place on Sunday, March 13th. Over 20,000 spectators will line up along Pope Avenue to enjoy floats and marching groups representing local businesses and charities, high school and university marching bands, the U.S. Marine Corps Band from Parris Island, pipe and drum bands, and a procession of local dignitaries.
