Looking for something different to do? Want to learn more about life in the South? Why not take a day trip to historical Beaufort. Located just about 1 hour way by car, this Southern city and its surrounding area has been featured in a couple of movies…Forest Gump to name one. Today it provides a great day trip for visitors to Hilton Head Island, and a glimpse at Southern hospitality.
One of your first activities should be a guided carriage or walking tour. Guides will take you past historic homes and churches, the Arsenal Museum, and the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB), founded as Beaufort College in 1757. They can provide historical facts and even gossip about the people who lived and visited the City of Beaufort over the last century or longer.
After a lunch at one of the many restaurants located in the Downtown area, be sure to walk along Bay Street, Beaufort’s shopping district, and take a look in the dozens of eclectic boutiques, gift shops, and antique stores. Beaufort’s abundant art galleries have helped earn the town a spot on America’s “100 Best Small Towns for the Arts.”
Towards the end of you visit, be sure to take in the breathtaking views, while you sit a spell in one of the swings overlooking the Beaufort River in the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. This picturesque area is the home of a number of different Beaufort festivals including the Annual Water Festival held each July.
