When the weather starts to cool we can look forward to the tasty chili cookoffs that are put on by local organizations. This Saturday, the 23rd, is the second annual Red Apron Chili Cookoff at the Tanger 2 Outlet. This Cookoff draws amateur and professional cooks from all over the southeastern region of the United States to compete in a sanctioned cookoff with the winner advancing to the International Chili Society cookoff to be held in California in October 2013. The International Chili Society Cookoff offers the opportunity to win first place honors in four different categories; Traditional Red, Chili Verde, Salsa, and Homestyle.
People’s Choice chili is anything goes and this is the chili the spectators get to vote on to pick their favorite. Last year it included shrimp, chicken and some other things we have yet to describe! Starts at 11:00 and judging is at 4:00. Crafts, hot dogs, and entertainment by three different bands will fill your day. Tickets are $10 and includes an entry wristband and bottomless “People’s Choice” chili tastings. Children under five enter and taste for free! Beer, wine, hot dogs and soft drinks are available for purchase throughout the day.
